The Catch: My Dream Project

My dad, his brother and nephew out fishing in the Daisy Ellen

The big news is that I’ve just landed my dream project! If you know anything about my stories you’ll know that the sea is the place I write from. I was raised as a fisherman’s daughter in Redcar, North Yorkshire, sucking on lobster tails like lollipops and guzzling down stories of sea gods and shipwrecks. Now I’m going to be working on a project called The Catch, to gather the stories of Redcar’s fishing culture past and present. The project is supported by Tees Valley Arts and I’m collaborating with the incredible photographer, Kev Howard, to capture images of fishing folk and the sea. The stories and images will be revealed at an exhibition at the Redcar Palace later this year.

I lost my dad when I was just nineteen, too young to be patient enough to listen to the stories of his life that he wanted to share. So I lost him and his stories. This project is giving me the chance to discover those things that were lost. I feel so very lucky to have the chance to do this work.

If you have any fishing stories from Redcar and North Yorkshire to share with me, please get in touch.
